In early
2010 an assessment team was assembled to evaluate the role of Loch Leven in the Mission of the Pacific Southwest Regional
Ministry, and determine the viability of this beloved place. Although summer camp and the conference center are recognized
as vital ministries, the expense and effort of owning and operating a facility of this scale was, by necessity, under careful
consideration.
After
extensive analysis and review the team found that Loch Leven is seen as an important part of the Region’s history and
heritage; provides many direct and indirect benefits; and has enormous potential as a resource. The team
determined that Loch Leven can meet its potential and become an even greater asset to the Region with a strong, broad based
commitment and the right approach to core areas. The development and implementation of an updated Strategic
Plan, currently in its initial stages, will assure that Loch Leven will better fulfill its mission in the coming years, and
find creative solutions to the challenges it faces today.
One of the biggest challenges is financial. Loch Leven
needs to raise at least 20% of its budget every year to provide appropriate maintenance and effectively meet its mission.
Additional money also needs to be set aside for future programs, upgrades, and the inevitable unplanned
expenses. Moreover, the age of the facility makes many upgrades necessary and unplanned expenses frequent.
Meeting the challenge will require ongoing support from existing benefactors, as well as developing new, diverse sources
of support both within the Region and in the greater community.
Within the Region, the “Rock the Loch” fundraiser is an excellent
example of innovation and initiative. This first annual event shows great promise of being fun, uplifting
and prosperous. Elsewhere Loch Leven leadership is working with public and private entities to fund major
projects which will improve safety, environmental health, access, and program opportunities. Current and
pending grants include fire clearance, meadow and stream renovation, professional site master planning, and water system upgrades.
Loch Leven has always relied on the generosity of the many people who have fallen in love with it over the years.
Developing a variety of volunteer opportunities is a high priority, as well as assuring those opportunities are safe,
fun, practical and satisfying. In the same vein, developing a variety of giving opportunities will allow
more people to contribute in meaningful ways.
For over 50 years spirits have been renewed at Loch Leven, let us now look
forward to returning the favor as we evoke the spirit of renewal and lay the foundation for the next 50 years.
